Trying to write from certain spirit’s perspectives feels impossible. It’s strange that the Dierne, who I’ve always felt was impossible to nail down, was – is – so easy to write. Yet spirits I know much better escape my hold. Their personality contorts on the page. I feel like appealing to the Laetha tends to backfire; I’ll be inspired, but like my soul was alight, leaving only ashes and exhaustion after.

Daily Observances 29 September – 4 October

I’ve been wanting to record more daily notes and observations for a few weeks now, as fall has set in solidly where I live. I decided to finally commit after seeing these posts by Morag Spinner and Jenett Silver. I’ll be posting every week on Friday, rounding up all my notes on the natural world as well as journal entries. A lot of the observation information likely won’t be interesting to most people – it’s mainly here so I can track how the world is slowly changing season to season and day to day.

The journal entries I include will reflect how I actually write in my journals nowadays: somewhat clipped, incomplete sentences. I am trying to just get ideas down before they flutter away out of my grasp, after all. If there isn’t anything relevant or if a day’s entry is too personal I will not include an excerpt for that day of the week.

Also included in these posts will be things like what books I have been reading, my projects for the previous and upcoming weeks, and notes about my devotional practices.

Books from the Week

Llewellyn’s 2020 Sabbat Alamanc. Currently reading through the Yule essays. A little bummed the removed the section for ‘Sabbat Tips on the Go’ and replaced it with a section on gems, but that’s because I don’t use gemstones in my own practice.

ADF Membership Guide. Part of trying to decide what sort of national/large Pagan organization I want to join. I ordered the guide from Amazon, and it oddly came with another book printed in the middle of it (a coloring book). Looking at it, it seems there must have simply been a printing error, as the two books are unrelated but printed from the same place.

  • Weather: Breezy, some strong gusts, scattered clouds, blue sky
  • Notes: More yellow in trees. Still a lot of green. Some trees are shedding, yet many retain their fiery foliage. Air smells nice. Bright sun. [Afternoon] clouds rolled in, steady rain. Later, storm.

Journal Entry

Veiling again today. […] Washing dishes felt good, contemplative. Sweeping was spontaneous, just to handle fur overload. Good contemplation. Thought that the Clarene […] desires from us action, attempts, effort. Not perfection. Cheekily thought that the Laetha does desire perfection, hence his focus on denial and restriction. I think both paradigms are useful.

Want to try a different inking style for today’s art. Something thinner and sketchier. Also want to pick up some Copics for the color. Feeling defeatist about art – but why? The point isn’t perfection. I suspect frustration comes from my art not being in any style I personally like.

Goals for October

Community Goals

  • Canonization Polls # 3 – 4
    • The current expectation is for the next polls to focus on the Fall of the Mortal (Arabella) and the Sundering of the West.
  • October Hangouts
    • I will be trying to organize a Halloween (or around that time) hangout where we can watch horror or other season-appropriate movies. Every Friday I will voice-chatting in the Otherfaith Discord for office hours.

Writing Goals

  • 30 Days of Devotion for the Clarene
    • I plan to begin posting essays for the various 30 Days of Devotion prompts starting sometime in November, but I want to get almost all of them written out before then.
  • Rabbit Troupe & Flower Maiden Stories
    • Origin stories for the Flower Maidens and Rabbit Troupe (who are celebrated at the end of the month) need to be written.

Liturgy & Prayer

  • Spirit Prayers
    • As I am consistent with my morning devotions, I want to add in more specific prayers. Developing prayers for certain spirits, especially those relevant to the current month, is one of my plans going forward.
  • Dedication Ritual
    • Creating a ritual for those who want to dedicate themselves to the Four Gods is a project that has been in the works for the past few weeks. I am hoping to have a draft out to the Other People by the beginning of November, at which point we will begin to decide when we want dedications to happen.

Results from 1.5 Canonization Poll

In order to establish a solid canon for the Otherfaith myths, I’ve begun a series of polls to allow the community to decide what will be considered canonical going forth. It’s important to note that the options that do not become enshrined as canon will not be considered ‘bad’, ‘wrong’, or ‘off-limits’. The main goal of establish a clearer canon is so that we can include the stories in printed materials and begin delineating between canon and headcanon.

These are the results from the follow-up poll to the first poll, largely focused on clarification questions like names to use and deification order. I did vote in this poll, but I will not be voting in any of the main storyline polls.

Follow-Up Questions

Pie chart showing results for 'Where should the Clarene's birthplace be?'. 100% voted for 'Somewhere along the France-German border'; 0% voted for 'Specific town along France-German border'. 6 responses total.

I’m glad that the result for this question was so solidly in the ‘vague’ direction, as assigning a specific town that none of the Other People have been to – essentially picking a place out of a hat – would feel a bit icky, in my opinion.

Pie chart showing results for 'Should Pallis be tied to a real-world star?'. 83.3% voted for 'No'; 16.7% voted for 'Yes'. 6 responses total.

Pallis has never been correlated with a specific star in any previous Otherfaith stories, and his nature as a fallen star meant that assigning an actual star or constellation would prove interesting.

Pie chart showing results for 'Should there be a story on the origins of the Ophelia (who she was before she became the poisoned river)?'. 100% voted 'Yes'; 0% voted 'No'. 5 responses total.

We don’t have any origin story for the Ophelia; she just shows up in the Clarene’s path and becomes a god shortly after. I did have an origin story back in 2011-2012 for the Ophelia, but I don’t believe I posted it anywhere publicly. An origin story for the Ophelia is going to likely take a while to come together and be canonized, but I look forward to it.

Pie chart showing results for 'Which name should be used for the Star that falls alongside Pallis?'. 80% voted for 'Mircea'; 20% voted for 'Misia'. 5 responses total.

As much as I do like the name Misia, meaning ‘hate’, for the main antagonist for the First Season myths, Mircea is the name that has been associated longest with the rival star that falls along with Pallis. Mircea itself has meanings of ‘peace’ and ‘world’, adding an irony that I enjoy. (Two of Mircea’s attendant spirits are Charity and Chastity, names chosen for their irony as well.)

Pie chart showing results for 'Which name should be used for the fairy Princess?'. 33.3% voted for 'Eirene'; 33.3% voted for 'Irene'; 16.7% voted for 'Irida'; 16.7% voted for 'Iria'. Picture shows other possible options for names. 6 responses total.

For the fairy princess the Clarene originally falls in love with a variety of names were provided. The majority of the names were connected to ‘peace’ with a few being tied to ‘rainbow’, both associations the princess has. We ended up with a tie between Eirene and Irene, with two other votes going toward Irida and Iria. We’ll be following up this question in the next poll.

Pie chart showing results for 'Should Adilene be deified as the Laetha, prior to Arabella?'. 80% voted for 'Yes', 20% voted for 'No'. 5 responses total.
Pie chart showing results for 'Should the fairy princess be deified as the Dierne, prior to Pallis?'. 80% voted for 'Yes', 20% voted for 'No'. 5 responses total.

I’m bundling these two together as they are essentially tied to the same overarching question: should a Laetha and Dierne exist before Arabella and Pallis take up the mantle? As the yes votes won out, we find new questions coming up. Are the roles of Laetha and Dierne somehow inherent to the Westernlands? Does the Laethic Firebird exist from the beginning of the West? What does it mean, exactly, to be the Dierne?

The next poll, moving into the ‘Stars in the Westernlands’ section of the myths, will start up on Saturday.

Results from First Canonization Poll

In order to establish a solid canon for the Otherfaith myths, I’ve begun a series of polls to allow the community to decide what will be considered canonical going forth. It’s important to note that the options that do not become enshrined as canon will not be considered ‘bad’, ‘wrong’, or ‘off-limits’. The main goal of establish a clearer canon is so that we can include the stories in printed materials and begin delineating between canon and headcanon.

These are the results from the first poll, focusing on the creation of the Westernlands and beginning of the mythic storyline.

(As a note, I did not vote in this poll. I was able to see the results as they came in and felt it would be unfair to submit my own votes when the purposes was to gauge the community’s perspectives.)

Origins of the Clarene & Ophelia

Pie chart showing results for 'Who should the Clarene be born to?'. 83.3% voted for 'Unnamed fairy queen'; 16.7% voted for 'Named fairy queen from folklore/history'; 0% voted for 'Named fairy queen (non-historical)'. 6 responses total.

The Clarene’s fairy mother has not been named previously, so the results of this question were not surprising. Going forward there will not be a canonical name for the Clarene’s fairy mother. This will likely not be an issue, as her mother is not included in any devotional or religious practices in the ‘faith.

Pie chart showing results for 'Where should the Clarene's birthplace be?'. 66.7% voted for 'Border of Germany and France'; 33.3% voted for 'Unspecified'; 0% voted for Germany; 0% voted for France; 0% voted for British Isles. 6 responses total.

I had written in older posts on the Clarene that her mythic origins were in Germany or France. Having now lived in Western Germany that impression has only increased. This question was a bit more split but ended with a preference for the Clarene’s birthplace being on the border of the two countries. What impact this will have upon devotional practice remains to be seen.

Pie chart showing the results for 'Should the fairy princess Clarene falls in love with be named?'. 100% voted for 'Yes'; 0% voted for 'No'. 6 responses total.

Originally the fairy princess in the Clarene’s origin story was not named, but in the community she is commonly called Irene. We will be polling regarding what name to use going forward as well. Having a name allows us to include her more easily in prayers and rituals.

Pie chart showing the results for 'Where should the Clarene encounter the Ophelia?'. 83.3% voted for 'Unspecified'; 16.7% voted for 'United States of America (West Coast)'; 0% voted for 'United States of America (East Coast)'; 0% voted for 'Western Coast of Europe'. 6 responses total.

Within official documents and writing for the Otherfaith, the Clarene and Ophelia’s meeting will not be assigned a specific location. Individual worshipers can assign a specific location in their own private practice, however. As an example, I might live near or visit a river that splits two very different environments (maybe one side is more developed by humans and the other more wild); I might perform a prayer or ritual and refer to the meeting of the two first gods as I pray. Keeping it unspecified in canon allows for more variance in our own practices, as we won’t feel the need to refer to a specific place or visit a specific locale.

Pie chart showing the results for 'Should the Ophelia be tied to a specific real-world river?'. 80% voted for 'No'; 20% voted for 'Yes'. 5 responses total.

Similar to the above question, though an official real-world river will not be assigned to the Ophelia, Other People should definitely use their own local landscape to connect with the gods. The Ophelia seems to resonate with the majority of rivers, but most especially those around which major cities have been built.

The Fall of Pallis

Pie chart showing results for 'When should Pallis' birth take place?'. 66.7% voted for 'Before the creation of the Westernlands'; 33.3% voted for 'At the creation of the Westernlands'; 0% voted for 'After the creation of the Westernlands'. 6 responses total.

The first question were I differed from the majority vote! We will go into Pallis’ story in future polls. I’ll have to adjust some prayers I’ve written, but apart from that I’m not sure what else will change with this canon.

Pie chart showing results for 'Where should Pallis be trapped?'. 50% voted for 'Unspecified'; 33.3% voted for 'Do not assign a real world object to the prison'; 16.7% voted for 'The Moon'; 0% voted for 'A (real) distant planet)'. 6 responses total.

Pallis is trapped by the other stars, eventually breaking out of his prison to fall to the Westernlands. His prison has never been assigned in past stories, and going forward the prison will remain vague.

Pie chart showing results for 'What fundamental change(s) should occur when stars fall? (Multiple Choice)'. 4 people voted for 'They become mortal (Mortality)'; 1 person voted for 'They gain gender/Ability to have gender'; 1 person voted for 'They gain sexuality/desire'. 4 responses total.

For these multiple choice questions, answers that got the most votes would become canon. Mortality being gained when stars fall will become canon; the two others are, again, perfectly fine for headcanon but won’t be included in official texts.

Pie chart showing results for 'Should Mircea/Misia fall along with Pallis?'. 83.3% voted for 'Yes'; 16.7% voted for 'No'. 6 responses total.

This question does impact the myths quite severely; the way the stories play out and the themes change a lot without Mircea involved. We’ve largely treated Mircea as a given in the mythology for years now; I was pleasantly surprised to see a dissenting vote honestly!

The Mortal Falls into the West

Pie chart showing results for 'Which name should be used for the Mortal?' 100% voted for 'Arabella'; 0% voted for 'Asier'. 4 responses total.

Arabella and Asier are essentially the same core personality, just with a different gender, so either one could have worked as the first mortal to fall into the West. With Arabella being the origin mortal, Asier will be the mortal who returns with Pallis to restore the West after its destruction.

Pie chart showing results for 'What happens when mortals fall into the West?' (Multiple choice). 6 people voted for 'Change depends on the individual'; 2 people voted for 'They become non-human in some way'; 0 people voted for 'Their gender changes'; 0 people voted for 'Nothing'. 6 responses total.

Again, the multiple choice questions, answers with the most responses become canon. Changes will occur to mortals that fall into the West, mythically, but it will be dependent on the individual and not a universal/static change.

Pie chart showing results for 'Why does the Mortal fall?'. 50% voted for 'They accidentally fall in'; 50% voted for 'They are seeking out fairyland'; 0% voted for '"Falling" is a metaphor for death'; 0% voted for 'They are pulled in by a fairy'. 6 responses total.

Finally, we get to the question that resulted in a tie. We will be discussing which option will become canon in our community areas, in order to break the tie. (This will take place on the Discord but discussion is also welcome in our FB group, Reddit, and the forums on this website.)

Halloween in the Otherfaith

The days are counting down to Halloween! Today I’m bringing you a post on the basics of Halloween in the Other People’s practice. Before we get into that, though, I have some site updates.

We now have a Calendar page, which will list all the current and upcoming holidays in the Otherfaith. You can also find our pages on Hell Month and Halloween through this tab.

Forums are enabled on our website. Feel free to sign up and contribute! Blogs will be auto-posted into the forums. Comments will be turned off on future blog posts and you’re encouraged to comment over in the forums instead.

We also have a Reddit community. If you use Reddit you can go over to r/Otherfaith and post any Otherfaith related content you want. Art posts and inspiration are welcome.

Let’s dig into Halloween.

What is Halloween (in the Otherfaith)?

Halloween is a joyful celebration for the Other People, a fall festival full of fun, candy, and pranks. The secular associations of the holiday are clear in the Otherfaith observance of the day.

Halloween is the last hurrah for the flower and fauna spirits that we welcomed in spring, specifically the Flower Maidens and Rabbit Troupe. Mirroring the Awakening of Flowers and Rabbits at the end of March, Halloween ends with a violent riot from the spirits of fertility and blooms. They streak through the City streets in the Westernlands, tearing apart and slaughtering any they come across.  The next morning every victim is reborn exactly as they were before the bloodbath. The riots of the Flowers and Rabbits becomes euphoric and ecstatic rather than terrifying, leading to high participation among the spirits.

Halloween is a time of fun horrors and creepy experiences that we regale in the dark around campfires to see who scares easiest. It is foremost about the joy that can be found in the dark. Other People can spend the night engaging in traditional trick-or-treating, marathoning horror movies, or visiting haunted houses in their area. They might also use the night to reflect on the fear we find in the dark and attempt to embrace it.

Intersecting Holy Days

DateEventInformation
October 13Friday the 13th (when applicable)The Other People observe every Friday the 13th and associate it with a specific spirit. October's Friday the 13th does not currently have a spirit tied to it.
October 31SamhainA Pagan festival, typically honoring the dead and ancestors. Part of the 'Wheel of the Year' in Pagan practice.

Gods Honored

The main god associated with Halloween is the Liathane, the god of chaos and horror. Being a god of terror and all creepy unpleasant feelings, the Liathane is a perfect fit for the night. The god abandons his more malevolent aspects to take on the mantle of tricks and pranks. He creeps up on us and shrieks, his face a terrifying visage, before wiping it away and laughing. His humorous horror is not for every soul, but he attempts to get us to enjoy the spirit of the day.

As mentioned above, the Flower Maidens and Rabbit Troupe are important to the holiday as well. Each of these groups is tied to fertility and greenery, specifically blooms, and their Final Riot also symbolizes the shift into fall that occurs in the northern hemisphere. Their energies retreat into the background of our lives until springtime strikes again.

Main Story of Holiday

  1. Having spent all year helping the plants bloom and reproduce, the Flower Maidens began to wane and fade.  Similarly, the Rabbit Troupe has become to grow tired from their constant revelries.
  2. Knowing they will not be able to keep up their duties throughout the winter, Alynah Blake and the leaders of the Flower Maidens decide to throw one last bloody celebration.
  3. The fall is a popular time for other festivities, however, and the Clarene is hesitant to approve of such a widespread slaughter when many of her people will be in the streets. She decides to cast a blessing on the night that everyone who perishes on Halloween might be reborn the next morning as they were before.
  4. the Dierne knows many of their spirits enjoy partying on the night as well though, and he wishes to avoid any unnecessary suffering. He blesses all caught up in the slaughter to feel pleasure rather than pain.
  5. The Fower Maiden and Rabbits grumble at this development. Their hedonistic orgies of blood and gore have been tamed, declawed so effectively as to be pointless.
  6. the Liathane intercedes. He decrees that as much pleasure the Dierne brings, fear will thread through the hearts of all present. He will touch their prey with his own brand and let the Flowers and Rabbits eat on that instead.
  7. But, he warns the troupes, if they try to feast on someone without his brand, the Liathane will come down and feast on the Flower and Rabbits instead.

Activities for Holiday

Prayer

We currently do not have prayers for Halloween.

Writing

Other People may choose to write various mythic fanfic during this time. Stories written for Halloween don’t have to focus on the themes of the day, but it is a good time to get into a spooky mood.

Some prompts for this time are:

  • The Flower Maidens and Rabbit Troupe lead their Final Riot on Halloween. What leads them to lead riots and bloodbaths through the West’s City?
  • What other festivities occur during this time? (Either for Otherfaith spirits or in other religious traditions.) How do they connect or differ from the Other People’s interpretation of Halloween?
  • the Liathane regularly shapeshifts into frightening creatures to scare the spirits in the West. What would he shapeshift into to give the other gods a fright?

Contemplative

Any topics related to fear, horror, adrenaline, and fun are good contemplation focuses for this holiday. An Other Person might also choose to focus on more somber topics or contemplate their own fears and anxieties.

As aids to contemplation, prompts are listed below.

  • What kind of fear do you find enjoyable? What kind of scares do you not enjoy? What differentiates them?
  • What sort of violence is accepted in the Other People’s Western Fairyland?
  • Why do we find ‘fear’ fun? Would the Four+ Gods, outside of the Liathane, find it fun as well?
  • In the Halloween myth, everyone who falls victim to the Flowers and Rabbits is reborn perfectly the next morning. Are there times in life where we get times to indulge without consequence, or do we never get a perfectly new morning like in the story?

Miscellaneous

Other People may decide to go trick-or-treating and dress up in costumes, as is common in the United States. Those wanting to do something for the wider community could help run a haunted house, collect food all October and donate it to a food bank or specific family at the end of October, or host trick-or-treating events for children in their local area.

February Holy Days

February Holy Days:

  • February 1: Imbolc (Broader Paganism)
  • February 2: Spring Cleaning
  • February 7: Birth of Claudia the Witch
  • February 8: Birth of Cordelia the Witch
  • February 13: Birth of Cecilia the Witch
  • February 13, Friday the 13: Birth of Thirteen
  • February 14: Valentine’s Day
  • February 15: Dahlia’s Day
  • February 19: Birth of Mallory, Right Hand to the Ophelia
  • February 23: Birth of Malaise the Witch
  • February 24: Birth of Malice the Witch
  • February 27: Birth of Mary the Witch
  • February 28: Ride of the Six Sisters
  • February 29: Liathianic Holiday

February 1 – Imbolc

I have added this to the Otherfaith calendar as it is part of larger Pagandom. All of our members are part of other Pagan traditions, and I have personally begun reconnecting with my Wiccish Pagan roots. I will be adding all of the eight Sabbats to the Otherfaith calendar less as actual ‘holy days’ and more as cultural observances (similar to Valentine’s Day).

February 2 – Spring Cleaning

February 2 is also observed as Imbolc by some. I have it listed as Spring Cleaning to acknowledge the quickening of spring and encourage physical cleaning of our spaces. Our homes can build up with grime and stuffy energy over the winter, when those in colder climates tend to stay indoors. (The opposite is true back in Tucson; summer was so hot many people stayed inside rather than brave the heat.) Energetic cleansing should be performed along with physical cleaning.

February 7 – Birth of Claudia the Witch

The majority of ‘Witch spirits’ in the Otherfaith are born in February, and the first Witch to be born is Claudia. Part of the Six Sisters, she is the eldest and closest to Cordelia. The two tend to appear with each other, often atop brooms. From an older post about February’s holy days:

They carry staffs and wands and ride around on brooms. They’re also associated with youth, and a bit of ill-gotten youth at that. They are teachers and compassionate spirits, watching over younger Witch spirits and…young witches on our own earth.

Personally I see the Witches as taking on more malevolent forms in February, before we see them out at the end of the month.

February 8 – Birth of Cordelia the Witch

Claudia’s closest sister. I see Cordelia as the younger sister of the two, though that shouldn’t be taken as gospel. Even during February and the Witches more malevolent stages, I perceive Cordelia as being the cheeriest of the Six Sisters. She gladly takes in apprentice witches and teaches them the basics. I associate her with ‘Hollywood magic’, the sort one sees in ‘The Craft’ and ‘Practical Magic’.

February 13 – Birth of Cecilia the Witch

The third of the Six Sisters, Cecilia is one of the newer additions to the Witches. Her name means ‘blind’, tying into the largely ‘negative’ name meanings the Witches have. Apart from the inkling of her existence I do not know much about this spirit yet.

February, Friday the 13 – Birth of Thirteen

A few years ago, as I was working on the Other People’s calendar, I had the inspiration to make each month’s ‘Friday the 13th’ a holy day. Theoretically the holy day would be observed only when that month’s 13th fell on Friday. February’s Friday the 13 corresponds to the Birth of Thirteen. A Witchy spirit herself, she steals the youth of other spirits and forces them to age. In one of the unpublished stories I wrote about Ava and Alma, Thirteen is the spirit that forces Ava to split herself and her sister into their child and adult selves (Arrise and Azure). Thirteen has described herself to me as ‘permanently thirteen’ years old. She could represent the process of aging and growing up, though there is likely much to be explored in her stealing and hoarding of youth itself.

February 14 – Valentines’ Day

Added to the calendar originally because of its cultural significance, Valentine’s Day can also herald the return of the Dierne Pallis. (I headcanon that the gods become busy after Reunion and slowly return to us throughout the new year, culminating with the Dierne Pallis’ return on Valentine’s.) The Other People may take this time to acknowledge spirits of love (the Laethas Arabella and Asier and Dierne Pallis) or their own spirit partners, along with any physical partners they have. I am hoping to integrate the giving of chocolate to friends and coworkers into the Other People’s cultural celebration of this holiday, borrowing from the Japanese concept of ‘obligation chocolate’.

February 15 – Dahlia’s Day

Previously called ‘Chocolate Day’, post-Valentine’s sees a bulk of chocolate and sweets go on sale. Dahlia is associate with joy and excess, as well as trade because of her seafaring ties, so chocolate is a good offering. Chocolates and sweets could also be offered to her lovers, furthering the connection to romance.

February 19 – Birth of Mallory, Right Hand of the Ophelia

Mallory is the daughter of Lyra, the huntress lover of the River Ophelia. She is rejected by her mother and accepted by the Ophelia, eventually becoming the god’s Right Hand. Right Hands are the direct aids to the deities, and they fill the role of the god should the god be incapacitated or absent. Mallory is mute and communicates through sign language, as well as very stern looks when something meets her disapproval. She is one of three Calamities the West experiences, the first two being the Firebird and Althea Altair. She controls rot and decay and can spread it through her touch.

February 23 – Birth of Malaise the Witch

Malaise brings about her namesake: sickness and disease. Malaise and Malice are both the most outwardly malevolent of the Six Sisters. Malaise appears as a witch from the swamp, wearing a ragged cloak and hair dripping with foul smelling water. She is tied strongly to the Ophelia, and her skin often has a blue-green tone and is slimy to the touch. She teaches the other witches how to wrangle and control disease and inflicts it on her enemies.

February 24 – Birth of Malice the Witch

Malice is the sister to Malaise and, similarly, brings about her namesake: hatred and spite. She is cheerier in appearance than her sister, tending to prefer bright colors. She views her magic of spreading fighting and ill will as a joyous act, and she loves seeing people bicker about any subject. She has especially sharp fingers that prod at people’s soft spots. Malice is associated with the Laetha and often wears the god’s colors of white, red, and gold.

February 27 – Birth of Mary the Witch

The most dangerous of the Six Sisters, Mary oversees all witchcraft focusing on murder and murderous revenge. She knows the most malevolent of all magic and lacks any hesitation toward using her arts. She is connected most strongly to the god of outsiders, the Liathane. Though she represents the most dangerous and feared witchcraft, she can also teach us some of the strongest protection magic. Her more amicable forms appear around Halloween, where she plays with her arts for the entertainment of those around her, especially children.

February 28 – Ride of the Six Sisters

At the end of February we bid goodbye to the Witches that have been with us throughout fall and winter. Spring calls in other riotous spirits, and we want to see out our playful and unpredictable guests. We send the Sisters out eastward to spread their knowledge. This holiday is also meant to help us move past the cold winter into the brighter springtime, shifting our own religious practice and magical arts into a different gear.

February 29 – Liathianic Holiday

For Leap Years, it has been suggested February 29 be associated with the Liathane. Originally I called February 29 ‘Fool’s Day’, but April 1 is actually Fool’s Day. I am unsure what a Liathanic holiday at this time might be or look like. Hopefully by next year we have a clearer picture.

The New Year, the End of Reunion

As evening settles in I busy myself making a new type of pasta dish. Rather than straining the liquid from the noodles, the pasta is cooked in the liquid as if making a risotto. It may not be a traditional New Year’s meal, but it tastes good and sits, still warm, as I wait for my husband to return from work. Glühwein sits in the crockpot, heated and ready to warm us on this cold January night. Rain came down all day in gentle swishes of water. The air was cold and prickly but smelled so nice, seeping into the house through the open windows before I couldn’t handle it and had to shutter them up and warm myself near the radiator.

As the new year came in I sat, Otherfaith books on one side of my laptop, writing away about the prayers and devotions of the Other People. I sat for a good few minutes (or more) trying to figure out how to write about the practical aspects. Do I start with the shrines? Do I start with prayers? How do I break it all down?

Strong incense drifted from my shrine in the entrance room. I breathed in and centered myself. My skin was almost buzzing with excitement. I could break down the practicals, because I had to, and because doing so would solidify my own practice.

I am adapting previous writings of mine concerning the Other People’s devotional life. While many prayers will remain intact, the timing and devotional schedule will change. This is to accommodate the realities of my current life. It is also so I can more easily advise people how to begin practicing in the ‘faith. Rather than the devotional week being Monday through Sunday, it is shortened to Monday through Friday, with the weekends having optional devotions but more focused on integrating the gods into our general lives.

Of course I can’t share everything that I’ll be writing. It will be published in a few months as ‘A Brief Introduction to the Otherfaith’. Patrons on Patreon will get a first look as well as an option to receive physical copies if they want.

And now it’s time to get back to dinner and the house and enjoying this cold new year.

New Year Expectations

Happy November!

We are getting into moving properly now. Despite this, I have so much to bring you in terms of content and updates.

Wiki.wiki, the site that hosts our current wiki, will be shutting down on December 1. Because of this we will be going back to Wikia for our wiki-hosting needs for the foreseeable future. The good news is that Wikia is a bit more newbie friendly! I had been hoping to put a MediaWiki-like plugin here but I haven’t had luck with that. Wikia lets users create apps from their wikis, however, so that will become useful in the future.

I have already moved our sizable FAQs from Wikia over here. Not all the FAQs on Wikia were transferred, as some of them are answered elsewhere on the site or are no longer relevant. You can find all our current FAQs under our main page. We have a new FAQs page under Practice FAQs.

Life is going to become incredibly busy for me during the move. On top of the move is the post-move: settling in, settling down, setting up. I hope to bring updates on this new chapter of my life and how it impacts my practice, but actually living it comes before writing about it. All the same, I look forward to sharing my religious practice and developing the Otherfaith.

Mid-November into December will be the busiest time when it comes to moving. January and February will focus on my first impressions of my new living area, as well as sharing setting up shrine spaces and settling into a new religious grove with the spirits. I am hoping to spend these winter months honing info in the Otherfaith and writing up some much needed ritual practices that people have asked for.

March is the time I am looking forward to most. That will be the time we will have our household really swinging together, and I’ll have my dear sewing machine returned to me. Here in Arizona I’ve already begun working on sewing cloaks. Cloaks and capes in godly colors are items I associate strongly with the Other People’s spirits and a physical representation of, well, so many things! They can show godly favor or preference for a deity, or they may simply show that one honors a deity specifically. I am working on red ones currently (of course) and hope to make some nice, if simple, embroidered cloaks to give (and eventually sell) to Other People. I have also made my first fleece blanket and absolutely loved creating it. The one I worked on was for my spouse and themed after his favorite Pokemon. I would like to make more religious-oriented blankets and throws, though, and will naturally focus on the Four+ Gods.

I think it fitting that as winter settles into this town, and as I am about to embark to a place where winter is truly cold, there will be much of my life stripped away. It will leave time for contemplation and consideration and rebuilding my religious practice. And I must admit to a certain joy to escaping this desert land. I love Tucson for what she is, but she and I do not get along. This fall has been especially rough on my body, with the late season pollen absolutely devastating my sinuses. I may be allergic to the plants in my new home, but it will also be greener, and wetter, and cold, and an adventure. I’ve been melancholy about leaving Tucson, this city that has cultivated me, but by gods I am ready.

Ready for a new home and the many new years ahead.

[Saturday] Life Updates

Traditionally women have prepared their homes for summer by getting rid of anything that was hot or heavy-looking. Sarah Ban Breathnach

Prayers:

from Ceisiwr Serith’s A Book of Pagan Prayer (Amazon link)
(Alterations are noted with brackets)

As comings in and goings out,
my prayers bracket my day.

It is my privilege to perform my morning prayers.
It is my honor to do what should be done.
As I rise with the morning, fog lifting slowly from my mind,
I pray not to forget these truths.

My day begins again,
and again I dedicate myself to the service of the gods.
May it be their tasks I perform.
As the day wears on, keep before my eyes, [Hand Holder],
the path of the [Four Gods],
that I may not forget that it is to them that I have dedicated my life,
so that every action may be an offering to them.

In the morning, everything is new.
The day’s blank slate lies before me,
ready for my writing.
May it be words of beauty I write.
May it be deeds of grace I do.
May it be thoughts of joy I think.
[Holy Ones], listen:
This is what I pray.

from the Otherfaith prayer book:

‘The First Prayer’
Speak we now, the first prayer of the People.
Clarene Ophelia Laetha Dierne
We praise the Four Gods of Western Faery –
you who burn, you who bury, you who dance, you who drown;
We sing to you your praises,
We speak to you your words,
that we may know and love you.
This we pray.

‘Morning Prayer’
Clarene Ophelia Laetha Dierne –
I wake today to thoughts of you.
Laethelia Ophelene Darren Liathane –
I go through the day along with you.
This I pray.
